Huck and Jim soon learn that men are coming to search Jacksons Island, and the two fugitives escape down the river on a raft. Jims plan is to reach the Illinois town of Cairo, and from there, he can take the Ohio River up to the free states. The plan troubles Huck and his conscience. However, Huck continues to stay with Jim as they travel, despite his belief that he is breaking all of society and religions tenets. Hucks struggle with the concept of slavery and Jims freedom continues throughout the novel. Huck and Jim encounter several characters during their flight, including a band of robbers aboard a wrecked steamboat and two Southern genteel families who are involved in a bloody feud. The only time that Huck and Jim feel that they are truly free is when they are aboard the raft. The Phelps think Huck is their visiting nephew, Tom Sawyer, and Huck easily falls into the role of Tom. Tom Sawyer soon arrives and, after Huck explains Jims captivity, Tom takes on the guise of his own brother, Sid. After dismissing Hucks practical method of escape, Tom suggests they invent an elaborate plan to free Jim. Toms plan is haphazardly based on several of the prison and adventure novels he has read, and the simple act of freeing Jim becomes a complicated circus with rope ladders, snakes, and mysterious messages. The entire novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is written in the first person and narrated by Huckleberry Huck Finn. Twain uses dialect English throughout the novel which helped to create Hucks Characterization. I also think that it gave the novel an authentic, period feel and helped to create a sense of place as well. I thought the characterization was very good in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Huck is very real throughout the novel. The other main character is Jim, a black slave Huck escapes his father and goes on the run. Jims characterization comes through Hucks eyes and I think Twain did a really good job to put it together. There has been critics about the novel such as Twain use of the Nigger and Jim being characterized as a comic clown. I completely disagree with this criticism. Since The Adventure of Huckleberry Finn was written in 1844 and was set between the time period before that the use of the word nigger to describe slaves like Jim is probably quite realisti c. Huck is no great thinker and is a bit simple. His impression of Jim is realistic.

Explore the ways Dickens uses places and atmosphere in Great Expectations Essay Dickens wrote Great Expectations in 1860. It is now well renowned for being a dark, atmospheric novel, set in 19th Century Victorian England. Charles Dickens is widely known today for the success of his novels, and his excellence in using fictional, atmospheric places in Great Expectations to reflect the minds of characters and to explore significant themes, such as class, crime, and love. Dickens uses symbolic description to convey messages about these themes, thus creating appropriate atmospheres for the characters. Dickens prepares the reader for the grimness of the novel as a whole by introducing melancholic places using literary devices. For example, the Kent marshes in Chapter 1, where Dickens uses symbols, personification, emotive imagery, and repetition in his description. Dickens opens Chapter 1 by using the setting of a churchyard to create an eerie mood. He describes the churchyard as bleak and overgrown, stressing the grimness and the isolation of the churchyard during Pips encounter with Magwitch. Dickens also uses emotive imagery of Pips family gravestones. He stresses that all Pip has as a memory of his parents and his five brothers is the inscriptions carved on the family gravestones which Pip imagines as their actual appearances. Pip imagines his father as stout with curly black hair, his mother freckled, and his five brothers being the shape of their lozenges with their hands in their trousers-pockets. He mentions that the afternoon was heading towards evening, suggesting that it was cold and fairly dark in the churchyard at the time, the darkness symbolising mystery and the unknown, adding to the vivid apprehensive atmosphere. Dickens stresses a fearful tone throughout Chapter 1, using words such as dead, black and gibbet, representing death, violence and crime. The repetition of dead and buried also creates a grim, dark and deathly mood. However, Dickens hints that on the inside, Magwitch is not an all-bad person. Like Pip, Magwitch is presented as a victim suffering pain. To add tension, Dickens uses long, dramatic sentences to portray Magwitchs long, traumatic, desperate journey of running. Magwitch also throws out a long line of threats at Pip, emphasising his panic and agitation. His desperation for food is shown when he tries to go as far as to scare Pip, a young child, with another imaginary criminal. Dickens also uses the repetition of limped and uses words such as cut, torn and shuddering portraying Magwitchs suffering. Dickens uses the ominous tone of Chapter 1 to express his outlook on the typical morals and philosophy in Victorian England and to explore themes that he later covers, such as childhood, crime, and class. Dickens portrays childhood as being a strong influence on the characters later on in life. He uses Pip in Chapter 1 to show this. Pip had a very unhappy, tragic childhood, mourning over his family and lacking love. Dickens suggests that this guided him to his dark, dreary, and lonely imagination in the churchyard on the evening of his encounter with Magwitch. Pip imagines dead people, stretching up cautiously out of their graves, and Magwitch limping as though he were the pirate come to life, going to hook himself back on the gibbet again. Pip frightens himself with his own twisted imagination, causing the reader to feel sympathy towards him. Crime, punishment and justice are important issues raised by Dickens in this novel. Dickens uses Magwitch in Chapter 1 to represent the theme of crime. Magwitch is an escaped convict, which Dickens emphasises by the description of the iron chained to his leg. Magwitch threatens, assaults and intimidates Pip using aggressive behaviour. He incites Pip to crime, telling him to steal and invents another imaginary criminal to scare Pip furthermore. This stresses Dickenss disapproval of crime and criminals. In Chapter 1, Dickens also covers the major theme of class and snobbery in Victorian England, which he uses both Pip and Magwitch to represent. Dickens portrays the working-class as good people, and therefore rewards them later on in the novel. Estellas relationship with Miss Havisham is presented as disfunctional. Dickens uses the rest of the novel to convey the moral that children need to be guided by role models. He shows this idea by Pip finally reaching his Great Expectations through hard work and having been guided by Joe, whereas, Estella had nobody except Miss Havisham to guide her. Estella is married to a violent man as a result, and pays for the emotional crime that she had put Pip through, which Miss Havisham had forced her to. In Chapters 8 and 11, Dickens explores the main themes of money and love. Dickens names Miss Havishams house, Satis House, using the word Satis meaning enough, as a symbol that Miss Havisham has more than enough money. Dickens strongly links the theme of money with love and happiness in these Chapters. The portrayal of Satis House is that although it is grand, it holds no love or happiness, which Dickens presents by using the idea that Miss Havisham is with money, but without love; the moral being that money doesnt guarantee happiness. Later on in the novel, Pip also represents this moral as his Great Expectations do not gain him Estella. In contrast to the other atmospheric places, Dickens portrays Wemmicks castle in Chapter 25 as a peculiar, ironic, mad house using vivid, emotive imagery and irony. He describes it as a little wooden cottage and Pips opinion of the castle as small with queer, gothic windows and a small, gothic door. The castle is also conveyed as secluded with a drawbridge that when hoisted up, cuts off any communication. Likewise with Miss Havisham and Satis House, the significance of this is that he has isolated himself from reality and society, living in his dream castle. Dickens uses the seclusion of the castle and the idea that Wemmick wishes neither himself nor Pip to speak of it whilst in the office to build up tension, and create anxiety for the reader. However, inside, Wemmicks castle is a place of love, life and comedy. Dickens uses the imagery of Wemmick stepping into his own little dream world of rightly deserved happiness when hes in his castle. His deserved happiness which Dickens stresses by the hard work that Wemmick puts into the castle, for example, engineering and gardening. Wemmicks castle is presented as though it is part of a magical fairytale by the way Dickens describes its ornamental lake with an island in the middle. Its portrayed as comic, a crazy little box of a cottage, the top of it was cut out and painted like a battery mounted with guns. The life of the castle is emphasised by the way that he describes all the animals that he keeps -pigs, fowls, and rabbits. gggggggggThe pathetic fallacy is used in Chapter 25 to reflect Wemmicks state of mind. Wemmick is portrayed through his ironic, comic castle as being wildly imaginative. Wemmicks cheerful attitude inside the castle also stresses life of the castle. Wemmicks father, Aged, is portrayed as cheerful and full of life. Dickens presents Wemmicks and Ageds relationship as just about the only sign of happiness in the novel: just about the only functional family. The theme explored in Chapter 25 is the love between Wemmick and his father. In this Chapter, love is portrayed unlike it is in the rest of the novel: rather than bringing pain, love is seen to give happiness. Aged is proud of his sons fine place and is described himself as clean, cheerful, comfortable, and well cared for. Dickens stresses the fond bond between them both and their enthusiasm for living life in the castle, away from reality. According to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, from the latter half of 1970s to 2004, the pervasiveness of excessive weight among children 2 to 5 years of age rose to 13.9 percent from 5 percent.   Among children 6 to 11 years of age, it escalated to 18. 8 percent from 6.5 percent, while it increased to 17.4 percent from 5 percent among those who are 12 to 19 years of age (Center for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC]), 2008). Thus, certain efforts were made by health and education experts to help parents encourage their children to engage in sports, exercise, and eat a healthy, balanced meal. After all, prevention is better than cure. If not taken care of, the excessive weight can make children vulnerable to certain diseases like high blood, diabetes, and other health illnesses (CDC, 2008; Boyse, 2007). Many experts suggest that one of the ways to help these children to lose weight without sacrificing the food that they want to eat is to encourage them to engage in sports and other group activities (Weintraub et al., 2008; Nemours, n.d.; Boyse, 2007). By engaging in physical activities, it will not only help the individual shed body fat, it would also promote self-esteem (Weintraub et al., 2008). Definition, Detection and Causes of Overweight   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Being overweight is a result of imbalance between the food intake and the activities needed to spend the energies taken (Daniels, 1997). It is characterized by an exceptionally large volume of body fat with respect to lean body mass (Stopka, 2005). To know if an individual is obese or overweight, his or her body mass index or BMI is computed (Stopka, 2005; Daniels, 1997). This method considers the proportionality of the individual’s weight to his or her height child (Stopka, 2005; Daniels, 1997). The National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (NCCDPHP) states that individuals with BMI of 25 to 29.9 are considered as â€Å"overweight,† while those with a BMI of 30 and above is considered as â€Å"obese† (Stopka, 2005).   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   A number of studies have discovered that that breastfeeding is associated with overweight children (Hediger, et al., 2001). Once a mother fails to nurture her child with the practice of breastfeeding, chances are that the child will become overweight in the future. Breastfeeding helps to lower the risk of obesity during the stage of childhood and adolescence (Hediger, et al., 2001). Most cases of overweight among children occur during the adolescence stage when the transition from child to adult happens (Hediger, et al., 2001). The food intake is later on built up as fats if not properly burned out of the body (Hediger, et al., 2001).   Fat distribution is also changed during this stage which also incorporates hormonal influences. The condition also varies according to gender. According to Heidger and his associates (2001), girls are more likely to be overweight than boys.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Most individuals on the adolescence stage are busy with their studies and participate in activities that will help them be informed and entertained. Many of them play video games and watch television after school as their own way of overcoming stress and pressures from school. While in the midst of these activities, they also munch junk food and drink sodas. As there are high amounts of calories in unhealthy food and drinks, they make children overweight (Collins, 2007). The incessant rise of fast food chains, consumption of calorie-dense foods and taking too much soft drink bring out more energy intake (Collins, 2007). However, this would not be a problem if the child regularly exercises and participates in activities. Lack of necessary exercise and physical activities also causes children to be overweight. When children eat more calories, they also need to burn more calories (Collins, 2007). Eating food that is detrimental to one’s health without enough physical activities to burn it will guarantee a child to be overweight (Collins, 2007). This is also said to be an environmental cause of obesity due to the technological means of entertainment available for children today. Collins (2007) calls this phenomenon as modern obesity.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Another cause of being overweight is the genetic roots of the child. The genes of the parents are inherited by children upon birth. Babies who are born to mothers who are overweight are more likely to gain more weight and are less active in actions (Collins, 2007). The metabolism of a child is also inherited from his or her parents. Thus, an obese parent whose metabolism is slow would have children with slow metabolism as well (Collins, 2007). The family eating habits also play a great influence as to why a child becomes overweight. Preparing and laying too much food on the table causes a child to eat more. Shopping and buying unhealthy foods and calorie-rich items will also cause the weight of children to increase (Collins, 2007). Effects of Obesity   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Risks are always present once a child is overweight. Chances are that the child will accumulate certain diseases most of which are related to too much calorie, cholesterol and sugar intake. Bone problems are also expected for overweight and obese individuals. The social development of a child is also affected because of being overweight. The overweight children may find it difficult to breathe.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Obese children are often inactive and lazy to do physical activities. This causes their hearts to weaken. With their relatively weak heart, it will pump harder than the normal sized individual. This condition is commonly known as cardiovascular abnormalities (Daniels, et al., 1997). Another cardiovascular abnormality that occurs in overweight or obese individuals is the escalation of blood pressure. When a child is obese, the blood pressure is more likely to increase. These cardiovascular abnormalities usually lead to a disease known as left ventricular hypertrophy which is a prevailing condition among obese and overweight children (Daniels, et al., 1997). This disease is characterized by an â€Å"increased left ventricular mass,† along with â€Å"lean body mass, fat mass and abnormalities in the systolic blood pressure† which predicts the accumulation of diseases such as â€Å"coronary heart disease, stroke and sudden death† (p. 804). Hypertension is also common for children with too much weight (Daniels, et al., 1997; Nemours Foundation, n.d.; CDC, 2008; Boyse, 2007).   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The disease Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus is also common among overweight children with a BMI of 30 kg/m2, which, according to adult standard, is counted as â€Å"obese.† According to the National Cholesterol Education Program, acquiring this disease also makes them vulnerable to cardiovascular diseases such as a coronary artery disease (Daniels, et al., 1997).   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Being overweight also causes a child to mature early. In general, an overweight childs body develops faster than those who have normal body sizes. Overweight female children also reach the pubertal stage earlier. This may be due to the fact that most overweight female children do not have strenuous activity that can help them lessen their weights. Since most foods taken by obese children are rich in oils and other fatty acids, they are also prone of having pimples, acnes and skin problems (Nemours Foundation, n.d.; CDC, 2008; Boyse, 2007).   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Psychological and social problems are also present when a child is overweight. One of the most common issues on this is depression. When a child grows bigger than his or her peers, he or she is more likely to be humiliated and teased in school for having a different body shape. This is a delicate issue which the child may find hard to overcome. It also results in the child’s low self esteem and negative self image (Strauss Pollack, 2003; Nemours Foundation, n.d.). The normal interaction towards other children is also limited because of this. More often than not, overweight children have fewer friends and their social life is limited to those who accept them as they are. Obese children are more likely to stay at home rather than go out and play with other people. They are isolated which makes them feel depressed, lonely, and stressed out. Teasing overweight children is also said to be associated with increased suicidal tendencies out of frustration and depression. Their condition causes them so many complications physically, emotionally and developmentally (Strauss Pollack, 2003; Nemours Foundation, n.d.). Prevention of Obesity   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   It is better to prevent being overweight rather than regret it once a child becomes obese. This is not easy to do but it needs to begin as early as childhood days. This should be considered especially for those who are born to overweight parents. Behavior is also one good way of handling childhood obesity. Diminishing unhealthy eating habits and getting right exercise result in a healthier body and lifestyle. In addition, reducing stagnant physical activities like watching television and video games will also lower the chances of being overweight.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Limiting the intake of calories will also stop one from being overweight. Instead of drinking sodas and other carbonated drinks, a child may switch to drinking fresh fruit juices. Fresh juices are healthier instead of artificially made juices. Drinking the recommended number of glasses of water a day (8 to10 glasses) will also help in replenishing lost water in the body and digesting food easily, and therefore, prevent all those fatty food and huge amount of calories from getting stuck in the body. The children should also be advised to avoid eating meals in fast food restaurants, where the meals served contain preservatives and too much food extenders that have more calories (Matheson et. al., 2004). Parents should also encourage their child to eat home cooked meals and convince him or her that these meals are more delicious than those that can be bought outside. (Matheson et. al., 2004). This will also guarantee parents that the food eaten by their child is clean and well-prepared. The parents should also stop preparing large servings for their child, as this entices a child to eat more and makes him or her always expect the same size of serving every meal time (Matheson et. al., 2004). They should also limit the inactivity of children by giving them scheduled time for television and playing computer games (Matheson et. al., 2004). It will also help if a child is encouraged not to eat and watch at the same time. Too much focus on the television program makes a child unaware to the amount of food already consumed.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   For difficult cases like gene-related obesity, it is important to counter this by doing physical activities. Regular exercise helps to achieve good digestion and good metabolism. Physical activities such as â€Å"biking, walking, and swimming† can also be done with the whole family. These activities also help brings the heart in good condition. Playing ball games also prevents being overweight and helps children become more sociable towards their peers (Campbell et al., 2001). Basketball and soccer are some examples of sports which can help overweight children lose and maintain their weight. At the same time, by engaging in these kinds of group activities, they will enjoy themselves with their peers (Campbell et al., 2001). Indoor physically activities like dancing will also help children lose weight (Campbell et al., 2001).   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   In a recent six-month experiment conducted by Weintraub (2008) and her colleagues among fourth and fifth graders, they divided the 21 participants into two groups. The first group received a health education program after school, while the other was subjected to a soccer program. Midway through the study until the end, a significant decline in BMI was found among participants in the soccer group as compared to those who were in the health education group. In three months, there was also a considerable increase in the everyday average and strenuous physical activities among children in the soccer group. The authors concluded that making overweight and obese children participate in an â€Å"after-school soccer program† is a practical, agreeable, and effective method to control the weight of these children. Excessive weight increases the likelihood of children to acquire fatal diseases such as cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes. Being overweight also negatively affects their self-esteem and self-image, leaving them depressed as a result. Encouraging them to eat a balanced diet and do physical activities such as family and school sports can aid overweight children in losing and maintaining a standard weight. Philosphy of Special Education :: essays research papers

Philosophy of Special Education I have known that I have wanted to become a special education teacher for almost three years. Over those three years I did lots of hands on experience with special education students. This past semester though I learned more in a semester about special education than I have in the past two and half years. Intro to Exceptional has taught me a lot of good information about laws, rules, and regulations of special education. I believe that inclusion is necessary for a child to prosper in society. I think that it is a great learning experience for both the special education student and their peers in the class. I think they both can learn a lot from each other. I also believe though if the student has a severe enough problem where learning in a regular setting would not benefit them I believe they should be placed in a setting where learning is most beneficial. Inclusion is a very good thing when it is used right where both the special education student and their peers can both learn from each other and still not be distracted from their studies. Being in Intro to Exceptional this semester and being a teacher?s assistant was a great experience. This class really helped me understand the students better. For example, in class we talked about the reward system with students. One student in my class had a hard time staying focused and getting his homework done. He always worked with me so I set up a deal with the teacher and if he finished his workbook by the time I was done with TA then he and I could have a game day. After that reward was set he did great.

Han China and Gupta India Essay

Han China differed from Gupta India politically, developing a strong bureaucratic system while India allowed local rulers to stay in control, but the Guptas focused more on trade and made more intellectual achievements than China, especially in mathematics. They established empires that were successful, but also distinct in their own ways. Although these two civilizations were notably different politically, economically, and intellectually, both were successful in bringing prosperity to their empires. During the Han dynasty, China successfully improved its bureaucracy, but in India local rulers maintained regional control. India’s territory never grew to be as large as China’s, so different forms of government were needed for each civilization. Han China retained the centralized government formed by the Qin, and expanded the bureaucracy. The bureaucratic system suited China, because it was able to support the civilization as it expanded into a large empire. The emperor Wu Ti created civil service examinations for his bureaucrats, which could be taken by any male. Wu Ti also urged Confucianism in order to gain support, as it urged respect for the government. On the other hand, India lacked an extensive bureaucracy, and local rulers were allowed to keep control as long as they remained loyal to Gupta authority. Because of its separated regions, it was very difficult to politically unify India. Similar to China, the Gupta rulers turned to religion to strengthen support for the government. In contrast to China, they favored Hinduism because they claimed to be appointed by Hindu gods. Additionally, Hinduism encouraged the rigid caste system. The empires were also similar because political power was given to landowners. Although the Gupta period is considered the golden age of India, providing its greatest period of political stability, it never developed the solid bureaucracy that Han China did. Although trade is vital to any civilization’s success, India emphasized trade far more than China did. China’s economy focused on extensive internal trade, while India developed more maritime trade. Trade gradually became more important during the Han dynasty, focusing on luxury items for the upper class such as silks, leather, and jewelry. Internal trade was made easier by the standardization of currency and circulation of copper coins. Han rulers expanded the empire, which allowed trade with more places. Some merchants even took profitable trips to India. Even though they were important, trade and the merchant class did not become the focal points of Chinese economy. This was due to the emphasis on Confucianism, which frowned upon a life devoted to moneymaking. On the other hand, the Guptas established a strong economy. It was partly based on technological sophistication, new inventions, and production. For example, Indian artisans were the first to manufacture cotton cloth, calico, and cashmere. In these areas, India and China were rivaling, but the India’s economy became more vigorous. Merchant activity was greater in India than in China, with merchants at a relatively high caste status. They traveled by land, and also by sea, increasing maritime trade. Han China and Gupta India’s economies can be compared as firmly agricultural, both relying on a large peasant class, organized into cooperative close-knit villages. Han rulers regulated agricultural supplies by storing extra grain and rice in good times, preventing price increases when harvests were bad. The Gupta period in India was known for its wealth, which was due to extensive trading both internally and by sea, as opposed to Han China’s economy, which relied more on technological innovations. The Hans and Guptas both made many important intellectual achievements, but there was more academic success in India, especially in mathematics. The Chinese studied astronomy, calculating the movement of planets, as well as observing sunspots. During the Han dynasty, scientists invented a seismograph to register earthquakes. In addition, they actively researched medicine, studying principles of hygiene that would support longer lives. Generally, the Chinese focused their studies on practical findings, such as discovering how things worked. They studied the mathematics of music that led to advances in acoustics. Like China, Indian scientists also progressed in astronomy and medicine. Many astronomical discoveries were made, such as the calculation of the solar year, the circumference and daily rotation of Earth, a theory of gravity, and the discovery of seven planets. In medicine, hospitals also stressed cleanliness, like China. India surpassed China in mathematical discoveries. Scholars created a numbering system and the concepts of zero and negative numbers. Mathematicians also calculated square roots and a more accurate value of pi. These advances in both civilizations were possible because of support from the government. In China, the government sponsored intellectual life, organizing research in astronomy. The Guptas had a vast university center in Nalanda featuring lecture halls, libraries, and an observatory. This supported the new discoveries that were being made. Both civilizations made important intellectual achievements that were advanced by world standards, but Gupta India especially excelled in mathematics. The Han and Gupta dynasties were both successful periods in China and India. Their success was due to different causes, because their societies were very unlike each other. China’s government centered on its strong bureaucracy developed during the Han dynasty, while India never advanced a decent bureaucratic system. Both civilizations had strong economies, but India focused more on over-sea trade than China did. Also, Gupta India made more intellectual achievements particularly in science and mathematics. The Han and Gupta periods were similar in some ways, but their civilizations showed distinct differences politically, economically, and intellectually.

Silence Before the Screams - 1489 Words

Who would have thought the world could change in the course of seven seconds? The cheers turned into a deadly silence, everyone dropping to the ground protecting themselves and their children. The presidential limousine speeding off, but where is it going and why? President Kennedy and Governor Connally have been shot, both fighting for their lives, but the question is who shot him, and where was it from? November 22, 1963 Dealey Plaza, people were lining up to get a glance at President John F. Kennedy. Kennedy arrived in Dallas, Texas to deliver a speech for his reelection for Presidency. He was scheduled to arrive and say his speech, but then a terrible turn of events happened. At around 12:30 P.M. as his bubble limousine was turning the corner, no one expected they’d have to be shielding themselves from a gunman, let alone seeing JFK be shot. 12:34 P.M. there was a silence, then screams of horror. Jacqueline Kennedy holding on to her husband as his life is slowly slipping away in her fingers. The police are first to act, but they don’t have much to go on. They enter all the tall buildings surrounding Dealey Plaza, but one employee from The School Depository Building is missing; his name was Lee Harvey Oswald.
